it intrigues me that the story (in fine bay area journalistic style) parrots a caltrans press release, complete with enthusiastic blurbs, yet fails to mention the first thing I wondered- how will this new porous pavement affect tire wear?

my parents raised me to assume that there was no free lunch- but hey, i'm not a journalist at a buffet-catered caltrans news conference.

I would tend to assume, just from guesswork, hand-waving and rudimentary physics, that a nice flat surface with some degree of restitution would be far better from the point of view of wear on tires than our current crappy road surfaces (especially concrete).

Oh, and, well, I care infinitely less about tire wear than safety and enjoyability of the drive (it's a lot less tiring driving any significant distance on quiet road surfaces than on loud ones). :)
