Flanvention II to be cancelled?!?!

The person who posted the link on Whedonesque accompanied it with a comment, "Can this be serious? How can a sold out convention be having financial problems? It makes no sense."

Damn right it makes no sense.

This makes me absolutely FURIOUS. The only way you can possibly have a sold-out convention have to be cancelled due to lack of financing is if there is disgraceful, horrendous mis-management. I am disgusted beyond words with Booster Events.

I stopped short of saying it on the Browncoats lists, because I figure it could be like throwing petrol on the flames, but ... this sounds like criminal negligence. It's not like they charged too little. The tickets were a similar price to last year's Flanvention, there's fewer headline guests than last year, I believe more people bought tickets than last year (last year didn't fully sell out), and yet ... they're having funding problems? Someone suggested in a thread about this that BE had used the funds from Flanvention II ticket sales to fund other underattended conventions. This sounds plausible and, frankly, criminal. If they can't afford to put on the convention, how will they afford to pay us all back for our purchased tickets?!

No. Sounds like the scum blew all the Flan II money on other unprofitable conventions and are just going to leave us swinging in the wind. Basically, sounds like BE's in death throes, will probably file bankruptcy, and leave us all minus our money.

They won't, not to put too fine a point on it. :(

Sounds like it may come to be time to sue them at some point. Depending on the type of corporation, the assets of those responsible may be liable.

You and me both!!! There seems to be a rising groundswell of support over at Whedonesque for the idea of the browncoats rallying and having a Big Damned Shindig at the Burbank Hilton, Flanvention or no Flanvention.

I can't say the idea thrills me too much. I mean, yes ... it is a lot of fun hanging out with a lot of Browncoats, but I wouldn't have paid the money I did for that (as it can be done much more cheaply). A big part of the fun of the experience is also meeting, chatting with, hanging out with the stars, major and minor, and the panels and other events.

Between urox and I, for the tickets and for the cocktail party, we've funded them to the tune of somewhere ... around $700, I think...

I don't relish the thought of potentially shelling out further hard-earned cash to pay for replacement Browncoat-run events ... and I can't really see hanging out in the hotel bar for 3 days.

If the stars all say they'll still come, that'd perhaps be a different matter.

I just called Arielle, and she's going to call SoCal James in the morning. We're going to try to save the day here and actually get all the guests to still come, if possible. There's no way the hotel's going to book another event in the ballrooms on this short notice, so we may be able to work something out with them.

Browncoats rock (unlike BE). We shall see. I won't hold my breath ... but I'd certainly be happy if it can be pulled off.

I'd be all for that! We all have the time off already, I was really looking forward to seeing everybody and hey, it'd be kinda like Flanvention minus Booster, which is a definite plus.

[And maybe Jewel would show up anyway.]

[My mind immediately went to the thought that they had been running their other cons with the Flan funds, too. If they don't clear up what happened pretty soon that is going to be the story everybody hears.]

I guess we'll have to see. I can certainly change my vacation time to different days or just cancel it for now and save it up for later. I remain unconvinced that it would be worth my while to spend the weekend in Burbank. That said, I'm willing to consider it.

Oh, and I totally agree with your last point. I suspect they won't contradict it because I suspect they can't (without lying). I think this goes to show yet again how BE (1) don't care about Firefly/Serenity, (2) can't manage their way out of a wet paper bag.

Burbank, CA.

$220-ish for the weekend pass (inc. autographs from all the headliners).

$120-ish(?) for the cocktail party ticket.

So, around $700 for two people.

Yeah, urox and I were discussing that last night. I think we can indeed dispute the charges if they screw us over and don't run the convention.

Well, the cocktail party is ... pretty expensive alright. Drinks are free (as much as you like and/or care to queue up for) and you get to hang out and chat with all the convention guests, so ... while it's overpriced, it was a whole lot of fun last year, so I wanted to do it again this year.

The weekend membership (~$220) isn't _really_ so bad, considering that it gives you access to all panels and so on, AND gives you autographs from all headline guests. Last year, there were 8 headline guests (all of the major cast except Gina), so at the going rate for autographs at cons, that would account for $160 of the $220 already, leaving the price not so surprising after all. This year, mind you, there were going to be somewhat fewer headline guests (6/7, I think?). That said... the weekend membership was less surprising than it initially sounds.

Of course, $700 for nothing at all is very expensive.

ATTENTION ALL BROWNCOATS PLANNING ON ATTENDING FLAN!

We are all a little disconcerted by the update from Booster
regarding the possible cancellation of Flan2. Many people have
expressed concern at their un-cancelable reservations (airfare and
hotel), and some are considering attending anyway.

With this in mind, the California Browncoats are willing to step up
and make sure that those who choose to come out anyway, will have
something to do when they get here. To do this successfully on such
short notice we need to coordinate efforts, make sure there's
someone who knows what's going on, and can coordinate efforts
effectively, without a lot of duplication, mixed messages, or
confusion.

If you are interested in helping, have already gathered information,
or just want to know what's going on, please contact Adam Levermore-
Rich (lexigeek on the boards) at adam.levermorerich at gmail dot com
so we can get an idea of what's happened already, we would greatly
appreciate it.

Also, if you're planning on going come hellmouth or high water,
please also let us know so we have an idea of how many people we
need to plan for. Any information you have about your room
reservations (number of rooms/number of nights) would also help us
negotiate with the Hilton.

Thank you for all your help! Please re-post this so we can start
channeling all this stupendous energy into creating a positive
experience for everyone.

Thank You
James and Lynn

Indeed, awesome friends of mine are stepping up to the plate and trying to salvage what they can of Flan II and see if it can't be pulled off even if Booster Events drops out from under it. They are amazing, wonderful people, even if they didn't go out for ramen with us on Sunday. :)

Ok, Adam's exempted from the "didn't go out to ramen with us" since he was hundreds of miles away so we didn't ask him.
