The ad-supported accounts are an optional thing, y'see. :) I actually think it's pretty sensible.
  1. It's entirely opt-in; the journal owner can choose to have a "sponsored-mode" journal (much like Eudora has a sponsored mode) such that ads appear in their journal, in order to gain account features/benefits similar to those one gets for a paid membership.

  2. If you have a paid/permanent account, and are signed in (e.g. me), you will never see ads in any journal, regardless of whether the journal owner chose sponsored mode or not.

  3. I'm told (this is more fluffy) that the ads are relatively non-obnoxious.
